As for the ones in the shadows… they operate devoid of faith, with parading ringing of false hope. But hope is vain when victory belongs to another.
Yet, for those walking in Light… Hope illuminates. Faith steps forward onto dry ground, even as massive ocean walls tower beside. While Rest keeps fears docile, courage rises.
When God opened His mouth, His words rang clear:
Don’t be afraid… Stand still… You will see My salvation… I will fight for you…
And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them…
And the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night. – Exodus 14:13-14, 19-20
Without faith, pleasing Him is impossible. And without pleasing Him, obedience is nonexistent.
My lack of faith disfigures me, turns me into someone I don’t like very much… my attitude, my viewpoint, my responses, my faltering progress—all are affected by the absence of trust. Anxieties, insecurities, doubts, fear, pride—these contort, disfigure me within, without, hindering momentum, obscuring the influence and assurance He longs to generate through me.
Fret not… Trust in the Lord, and do good… Feed on His faithfulness… Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart… Commit… Trust… He shall bring it to pass… Rest… Wait… Do not fret… Cease from anger… Do not fret… – Psalm 37
God promised His people they would never see the faces of their enemies again.
Move forward on what God says. The stepping is the proof of my believing, and my believing gives substance to His meaning… if He says it, He will fulfill it.
Scripture overflows with the proofs of His promises. Remember what He said. Don’t forget what He did. Why do I still struggle to believe Him? What more could He do to convince me?
The display of power, the exhibition of His ability, the revelation of future prosperity, their adoption into His family… The Israelites had all this and more to base their faith upon.
Questions afflict the restless mind… unbelief leads astray… disobedience brings consequences.
One generation of Israelites never arrived in the land promised; Zechariah lived in silence for nine months; a king and his sons died, his lineage replaced by a man loyal to the beatings of God’s heart; others through the chronicles of time missed out.
Like the Israelites, faithless in the stranglehold of fear, I feed that wretched side of my nature, retreating or raging or retaliating… so unlike the One Who desires to mold me in His image.
But in the mirror, in the Word, I am faced with this wretchedness… and I recoil… Begging for mercy, I tentatively take a step, and another, and another… in Faith.
To those without Faith, God appears unreasonable, tyrannical, repressive.
But appearances can be deceiving.
To His own, He is the most generous Father, most loving Savior, most compassionate Comforter. Holy, worthy, the very definition of faithful, enduring, selfless, loving…
What He accomplished for Moses, He will accomplish for you and for me and for all who believe.
Even when the outcome is unknown, when we can’t comprehend—He’s working through the details. I don’t have to know the plan, because I can rest in the knowing that He knows.
I am in a good place, on this side of the cloud.
