In the beginning…

Then there was Light.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, Let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.  –  Genesis 1:1-4

We’ve read these verses over and again till we know them by heart. But there’s more…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.  –  John 1:1-5

The Light shines… still.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Shoving darkness aside, God separated one from the other.

Light entered the arena to reveal and to rule.

In teaching my children Creation, on the first day of kindergarten we stood in the kitchen to start the lesson. I looked around the room, then looked at each one, and smiled, anticipating…

They smiled, too, anticipating.

Then I spread my arms and spoke the words, Let there be cookies!

Their eyes widened.

They looked around, then looked back at me.

We shook our heads.

Because I knew and they knew.

Nobody can make something just by speaking.

Except for God.

(And how many of us can create without first making a mess? You should see the bins and piles and disjointed mounds of stuff at church and in my living room the week before an event!)

In the beginning, God was there.

From the beginning.

Before the beginning.

And always after.

In all His forms.

The only and eternal I AM.

And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM.  –  Exodus 3:14

Jesus said to them (the scribes and Pharisees), Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.  –  John 8:58

…giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, Who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him… having made peace through the blood of His cross.  –  Colossians 1:12-20

God’s word, announced for all to hear, was the force behind all we see and hear and feel and know. Today, in the present, and in everyday past, and in all that is still to come.

To be continued…
